Game: Hoops                                             Type: Fundamental Movements

Cycle: 1                                                     Activity Level: Moderate

Tactics: Find a hoop quickly                      Equipment: 1 hula-hoop per student

QEP:
COMPETENCY I, performing and repeating sequences of movement skills, awareness of the body and its parts with an object.

Description:

Layer 1: The students find a space of their own on the defined playing space. They start static, and move with the hoops (the hoop stays close to the body).

Layer 2: Add locomotion: move around the hoop. The hoop stays static.

Layer 3: The students move around in the playing space with their hoop when the music is on. They stop when the music stops.

Layer 4: All the hoops are on the ground. When the music starts, the students move around the playing space, doing different movement patterns. When the music stops, they have to go stand in a hoop, and do a balanced position (e.g.: nose & toes).

Layer 5: Same as layer 4 except when the music stops, the instructor calls a color and the students have to go to the hoops of the defined color. No balanced position is necessary.

MODIFICATIONS:

The playing space can be modified. Hoops of different sizes can add a challenge. The students can help and guide the students that don’t have a hoop.

SAFETY:

Remind the students to keep their head up using space carefully, keeping their head up and scanning. The hoops should stay close to the body (no throwing).
